Tuesday Feb 02, 2021
On Tuesday's "The Extra", host Shannon Brinias was joined by Cody Wigner, assistant area wildlife manager for Colorado Parks and Wildlife, as their staff is preparing to move about 20 bighorn sheep from the Rampart herd near Garden of the Gods to Beaver Creek canyon below the Skaguay Reservoir dam south of Victor in Teller County. This is a major project that involves baiting the sheep daily for a month prior to the capture date. CPW officers will erect a large net that resembles a circus tent, lure the sheep underneath it using apple pulp and hay and dropping it. The sheep will be trucked and airlifted into the canyon. We are hoping to replace an historic herd that collapsed several years ago due to disease. More information can be found at CPW.state.co.us/bighorn and a video showing a similar translocation is here.

On July 31, 2021, Colorado Springs, now the 39th largest city in the United States, will officially turn 150, and its citizens will once again gather to celebrate. Broerman shared information on the 35 Voter Service and Polling Centers that are open, and the services provided like registering to vote or updating voter records, voting on an ADA Ballot Marking Device or getting a replacement ballot. He also urged voters to go early to drop off ballots or seek services in-person, due to the volume of voters expected on November 3rd. So far, Broerman reports about 300,000 of El Paso County's registered voters have returned ballots, a trend which looks to easily eclipse to the turnout in 2016 of roughly 327,000 voters. He projects final election turnout will hit 375K.

During this global health crisis, humor can be a way of boosting immunity by elevating your mood, a topic explored on Tuesday's "The Extra". Humor has been found to have short-term and long-term health benefits, such as: stimulation of organs via enhanced intake of oxygen during laughter; increased release of endorphins; lowered heart rate and blood pressure; release of stress-fighting neuropeptides; and easing of depression symptoms. Host Shannon Brinias and her guest Bill Stainton discussed strategies for utilizing humor as a coping mechanism, as well as the need for people to apply innovative thinking to their everyday lives. Stainton is a Certified Professional Speaker inducted into the speakers' association Hall of Fame, as well as a 29-time Emmy Award winner for "Almost Live", a weekly comedy show. Stainton writes a frequent blog discussing these topics. More information can be found at BillStainton.com.

On KRDO's "The Extra" on Wednesday, El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Chuck Broerman joined host Shannon Brinias to talk about the upcoming Election 2020. He described how ballots will be mailed October 9th, and early returns of ballots will enable his office to receive them and reduce the time for tabulation needed on Election Day. He says once a registered voter receives their ballot, they can begin researching candidates, measures and issues. In El Paso County, there are, in addition to the Presidential race, eleven statewide measures and thirteen local measures and issues depending on which precinct you reside in. Ballots must be received by election offices or in any of the 37 drop boxes located around the county by 7 p.m. on November 3rd, Election Day 2020. For more information, govotecolorado.org and epcvotes.com are good sources of information. You can also call 719-575-8683. Many parents are wondering how to keep their kids connected, despite fears over COVID-19. As local school districts work on the best options for each of the areas they serve, which include in-person learning for younger students or hybrid or remote-only options, most after-school clubs, sports, and other extra-curricular activities have been postponed—at least for now. But, not Girl Scouts! The organization has taken this crisis and turned it into an opportunity to offer innovative and safe ways for girls to make new friends and learn life skills. Host Shannon Brinias was joined on "The Extra" Tuesday by Girl Scouts of Colorado's Katie Singleton, Chief Membership and Program Officer, and Emily Speck, Mission Delivery Manager. Rental rates have grown 2.1% year-to-year, with the median rental cost of a 2BR apartment at $1,285 per month. This contrasts to the national trend and the trend across Colorado as a whole, which have been mostly flat due to the coronavirus pandemic.
