Humans spend nearly a third of their lives asleep, and although the evolutionary purpose for sleep remains elusive, current sleep habits are the consequence of the industrial revolution and development of artificial light. Evidence suggests that losing sleep can cause problems with memory, particularly working memory, the process that allows people to hold information in an easily accessible way while working out a problem.
