British PM Boris Johnson said in a televised address on Sunday that "the UK's four chief medical officers have raised the COVID alert level to four, its second highest level, because of the evidence that omicron is doubling" in the UK every couple of days. Johnson said they know "from bitter experience" how these exponential curves develop: "No one should be in any doubt, there is a tidal wave of omicron coming and I'm afraid it is now clear that two doses of vaccine are simply not enough to give the level of protection we all need. Johnson announced the UK is launching the 'omicron emergency booster national mission' which he says is unlike anything they've done before in the vaccination program: two weeks ago Johnson promised every eligible adult a booster by the end of January. In light of the omicron emergency, he's bringing that target forward by a whole month. Everyone eligible aged 18 and over in England will have a chance to get their booster before the New Year. And he says his administration will provide additional support to accelerate vaccinations in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

President Biden is facing significant skepticism from the American public, with his job approval rating lagging across a range of major issues, including new lows for his handling of crime, gun violence and the economic recovery according to a new ABC/Ipsos poll. As the White House confronts rising and widespread concern about inflation, Americans are especially negative on how the Biden administration is managing this issue. There's no doubt that this administration faces an uphill battle during a challenging time, but how do Biden's ratings stack up against some of his predecessors'? Steve on whether there is some perspective to be gained.

Michigan school district, its superintendent and others after four students were fatally shot and others wounded at Oxford High School, a lawyer announced Thursday. The lawsuits were filed in federal court in Detroit by Jeffrey and Brandi Franz on behalf of their daughters, Riley, a 17-year-old senior who was shot in the neck Nov. 30, and her sister Bella, a 14-year-old ninth grader who was next to her at the time, attorney Geoffrey Fieger said. One of the lawsuits criticized school officials for not expelling, disciplining or searching Crumbley prior to the shooting which allowed Crumbley to return to his classroom "and carry out his murderous rampage." The lawsuit also said the school district "knew or should have known that the policies, procedures, training supervision and discipline" staff members named in the suit "were inadequate for the tasks that each defendant was required to perform."

Former US Senator Bob Dole passed away over the weekend, the Elizabeth Dole Foundation said in a statement Sunday. Dole served in many roles in his nearly eighty year career. As an Army officer in World War II, he was wounded while on a mission in Northern Italy. Though there were doubts at the time he’d survive, Dole went on to run for public office – first serving in the Kansas House of Representatives and then at the national level as a Republican to the 87th Congress. In 1964, he voted in favor of the Civil Rights Act, and in 1965 voted in favor of the Voting Rights Act. In the early 1970s, he served as the chairman of the Republican National Committee, including during the 1972 election and Watergate break-in. Dole ran three times for president. He lost in primaries in 1980 to Ronald Reagan and in 1988 to George H.W. Bush. He won the Republican party nomination in 1996, but lost the general election to Bill Clinton. In 1997, months after losing the presidential election, Clinton presented Dole with the Presidential Medal of Freedom. Steve looks back on the life of a lawmaker he knew very well, and can tell you what lessons modern Washington can learn from the legacy of Bob Dole.

Holiday conversations are a stereotype…for a reason. With the added stresses of the political climate/covid/etc, what should be done to keep the holiday gatherings from becoming a warzone? The holiday season always brings up thoughts of loss/grief, what should people know as they process these feelings this year? The Greenberg Center for Learning and Tolerance is pleased to announce the screening of Red Horizon, a documentary film about a new generation of aviators who are dedicated to continuing the legacy of the historic Tuskegee Airmen. These young African American men and women are pursuing their dream of becoming pilots and aircraft technicians and are inspiring others to take to the skies and to change the racial imbalance in the world of aviation. Prior to the 1940s, young African Americans who aspired to become pilots faced significant obstacles and even overt racism including the belief that African Americans could not learn to fly or to operate sophisticated aircraft. A small airstrip in Tuskegee, AL, changed all of that and prepared a generation of more than 1,000 courageous pilots and aircraft mechanics during WWII.
In the U.S. today, African Americans comprise 13.6 percent of the population. However, African American pilots and aviation mechanics still make up only a small fraction of professionals working in the aviation industry. Founded in 2015 by Lieutenant Colonel Rich Peace and Brigadier General Williams Sparrow, the Red Tail Scholarship Foundation is working hard to train a new generation of Tuskegee Aviators and inspire others to chase their dreams.
Tickets are $5: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/red-horizon-tickets-210326962607

With American families facing the highest inflation rate since 1990, and President Biden’s approval numbers remaining stubbornly low, many Democrats are raising concerns over whether the president is doing enough to sway voters opinions of the economy. Last week, Biden tapped into the country’s strategic oil reserves in an effort to tamp down on soaring gas prices, though economists are skeptical that the White House can move the needle with any significance in the short term. A potential bright spot for Democrats is the Build Back Better social infrastructure legislation, which enjoys broad support according to recent polling. But the bill faces a rocky path forward in the Senate, and questions remain as to whether approval for the bill will translate into approval for Biden himself. Steve breaks it all down for you.
