White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan spoke with his Russian counterpart, Nikolay Patrushev, today  "to reiterate the United States' firm and clear opposition to Russia's unprovoked and unjustified invasion of Ukraine," according to a statement from the National Security Council.  Sullivan told Patrushev that Russia should stop attacking Ukraine if it's serious about diplomacy and warned "about the consequences and implications of any possible Russian decision to use chemical or biological weapons in Ukraine."   The statement said Sullivan "clearly laid out" that the U.S. will continue "imposing costs on Russia" as well as support Ukraine and defend NATO's eastern flank.  This conversation marked the first high-level engagement between the U.S. and Russia since the Kremlin launched its war against Ukraine.  And President Biden spoke this afternoon after this morning's virtual address to Congress by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in which he pleaded for more help from the United States.   Biden announced that an additional $800 million in military aid will be sent to Ukraine.

The Federal Reserve is pushing up interest rates for the first time since 2018.

International oil benchmark Brent crude, which reached nearly $139 a barrel overnight as the market reacted to the possibility of a ban, was up 6.94% at $131.76 at 10:30 a.m. EST. The shift was reflected in the Dow Jones Industrial Average plunging more than 680 points, or by more than 2%.

 

The U.S. imported about 672,000 barrels a day from Russia in 2021, roughly 8% of the total U.S. of oil and refined products, according to the Energy Information Administration. Today’s ban announcement by US President Joe Biden on Russian oil, gas, and energy imports will increase prices on these commodities - the second-biggest jump in 30 years – stressing market volatility. Founder & CEO of Quant Data, Mr. Hiesinger is a market analyst with extensive experience in observing market fluctuations.

Astronaut Mark Vande Hei, who holds the ongoing record for longest space flight, is set to end his 355 days in on the International Space Station in just three weeks. The plan is for him to land in Kazakhstan with two Russian cosmonauts on a Russian spacecraft. But unprecedented sanctions against Russia could put Vande Hei's return on hold. This morning’s Consumer Price Index report finds inflation has hit a 40-year high, up 7.9% over the past year. With gas prices rising and things like car maintenance, tires, and brakes all more costly in this economy, gig workers say increasingly drivers are parking their cars. They complain companies like Uber, Lyft, and Doordash have not increased their pay enough to keep up with current costs and if they drive it’s almost impossible to make money once they fill the tank and take care of other needs. They want the companies to factor it into the bottom line and not to increase prices for riders because then ridership will go down. One driver in San Francisco says he has to do quick math every time a trip comes in to figure out if it’s worth taking. He has to make $3 per mile for any trip over two miles or he will lose money on the trip. Increasingly more drivers say their buddies are finding other jobs. 

Evidence that the “dad bod” has become increasingly acceptable in the U.S., half of all men (55%) say it’s okay to have a “dad bod” in a new survey on men’s health. Yet, the same survey shows that men don’t know the facts about the most common health issues affecting them, including the health risks that “dad bod” could be hiding.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett made a secret trip to Moscow over the weekend to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin in an effort to try to end the bloodshed in Ukraine. Bennett’s office says the sit down was a move supported by President Biden. Israel has refused requests by Ukraine for military assistance given its security concerns in Syria where Russian troops are stationed. Bennett says Israel has a quote “moral duty” to mediate between Russia and Ukraine even if the chances of success are small. Bennett hasn’t revealed the details of his talk with Putin, so it’s unclear what if anything was accomplished. Since leaving the Kremlin, Bennett’s office says he’s spoken 3 times with Ukrainian President Volodmyr Zelenskyy but added nothing else.
