More good news in the fight against the coronavirus: Pfizer and BioNTech's COVID-19 vaccine is 100% effective against the virus in children ages 12 to 15, the companies announced today. In a placebo-controlled trial of 2,260 adolescents, none of the participants who received the real vaccine developed COVID-19, the companies said. Eighteen adolescents who received placebo, or fake, doses became infected with the virus, they said. The company hopes to start vaccinating children ages 12 to 15 before the start of the next school year. Experts say that ensuring vaccines are safe and effective in children will be crucial to ending the pandemic. Although children are less likely to die of COVID-19, it’s still possible for them to get sick and spread the virus.

As states continue to open up eligibility for the COVID-19 vaccine and more services start to require proof of vaccination, experts are warning of a rise in fraudulent activity surrounding vaccine passports. Vaccine passports and certificates are being touted around the world as a way for various industries to start returning to normal while minimizing the risk of spreading the coronavirus. Consumers are already being required to use the passes at venues ranging from sports arenas and movie theaters to services like international travel. But with the rollout of vaccine passports, experts tell ABC News they are seeing an increase in websites and online forums advertising fraudulent certificates and passports.

Salvage teams have finally set free a colossal container ship that has halted global trade through the Suez Canal, bringing an end to a crisis that for nearly a week had clogged one of the world's most vital maritime arteries. Helped by the peak of high tide, a flotilla of tugboats managed to dislodge the skyscraper-sized Ever Given from the canal's sandy bank, where it had been firmly lodged since last Tuesday. Will these events effect out wallets?

The suspect in the Colorado supermarket shootings bought a gun before the shooting at a local gun store after passing a background check, the store’s owner said today. The owner of Eagles Nest Armory in the Denver suburb of Arvada, said in a statement that his store was cooperating with authorities and that the suspect in the shooting passed a background check conducted by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation before purchasing the firearm. “Regarding the firearm in question, a background check of the purchaser was conducted as required by Colorado law and approval for the sale was provided by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation. We have and will continue to fully cooperate with law enforcement as their investigation continues.” According to the arrest affidavit, the suspect bought a Ruger AR-556 pistol — which resembles an AR-15 rifle with a slightly shorter stock. He was convicted in 2018 of misdemeanor assault after he knocked a fellow high school student to the floor, climbed on top of him and punched him in the head several times, according to police documents. He was sentenced to probation and community service.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp drew protests Thursday as he signed into law a sweeping Republican-sponsored overhaul of state elections that includes new restrictions on voting by mail and greater legislative control over how elections are run. The law requires a photo ID in order to vote absentee by mail, after more than 1.3 million Georgia voters used that option during the COVID-19 pandemic. It also cuts the time people have to request an absentee ballot and limits where ballot drop boxes can be placed and when they can be accessed.

The 21-year-old accused of gunning down 10 people, including a police officer, at the King Soopers grocery store in Boulder, Colorado on Monday made his first court appearance today, where Defense attorneys said more time is needed to assess the suspect's mental health. Prosecutors said additional charges are expected in the next few weeks and he judge ordered a status conference to take place in about 60 to 90 days. The suspect did not speak other than to say "yes" to a question from the judge, who advised him of the 10 charges of first-degree murder he faces. Senate Democrats bidding to solidify support for their $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill have agreed to pare back the measure's emergency jobless benefits but extend them for an extra month. Democrats hope the Senate will approve the overall legislation over the weekend, then have the House give it final approval and whisk it to Biden for his signature. But first, the Senate has to vote on a mountain of amendments ("vote-a-rama"), mostly by GOP opponents and virtually all of which are destined to fail. As of this writing, Republicans have offered 1,008 amendments to be voted on.

The CDC says for the first time, 2 million vaccine doses are being put into arms each day. Huge venues like Yankee Stadium are now going 24/7. At the same time, alarm from health officials about rolling back restrictions is growing with more health leaders saying it’s too soon and that the gains that we’ve made could be lost before more are vaccinated. In Texas, Gov. Greg Abbott said people will continue to wear masks and take precautions despite the mandate there. Atlanta is pleading with people not to come to town for the NBA All-Star game this weekend -- Georgia is in last place among U.S. states in the pace of vaccination. Alabama, West Virginia, and Connecticut are all extending mask mandates saying they need more time to vaccinate more people.

ABC's Andy Field joined Andrew Rogers and Dan Cochell on KRDO's Afternoon News as the Biden administration says it's taking "creative steps" to get broader public support for its $1.9 trillion COVID-19 rescue plan. That's as attempts to strike a deal with Republicans have led to concerns about
delays in coronavirus relief. President Joe Biden and his new treasury
secretary said Friday that the cost of doing too little is much greater
than the cost of doing and spending too much. White House press secretary
Jen Psaki said Biden recognizes the importance of speaking directly to the
American people about his plan for vaccinations and supporting the
economy. But the pandemic has limited his ability to safely travel the
country to drum up support.

Vaccine maker Moderna is now launching studies of "an emerging variant booster candidate" against the South African variant of the virus. ABC's Andy Field joined Andrew Rogers on KRDO's Afternoon News as Joe Biden has officially become the 46th president of the United States and Kamala Harris is the first Black woman and first person of South Asian descent to become Vice President. In his inaugural address, President Biden called on Americans to overcome their divisions, declaring in his first address in office that "without unity, there is no peace." Biden also pledged that he would be honest with the country as it continues to confront difficulties, saying that leaders have an obligation "to defend the truth and defeat the lies." As he did frequently during the campaign, Biden pledged that he will be a "president for all Americans" and will "fight as hard for those who did not support me as for those who did." He added, "We must end this uncivil war that pits red against blue." In his first official acts as president, Biden is signing executive orders on a broad range of issues, from the coronavirus pandemic to climate change and immigration, to fulfill campaign promises. He'll require that masks be worn in federal buildings to try to slow the spread of coronavirus. He's directing the U.S. to rejoin the World Health Organization and the Paris climate accords. And he's stopping the construction of the border wall and reversing President Trump's policies on immigration.

ABC's Andy Field joined Andrew Rogers on KRDO's Afternoon News as President Trump's personal attorney Rudy Giuliani apparently won’t be on Trump’s impeachment team. Giuliani, who has been leading the president’s efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, told ABC News Chief White House Correspondent Jonathan Karl over the weekend that he will not be part of Trump’s legal team for the upcoming Senate impeachment trial due to his involvement in the January 6 rally in Washington, D.C. that led to the attack on the U.S. Capitol building. “Because I gave an earlier speech [at the rally], I am a witness and therefore unable to participate in court or in the Senate chamber,” Giuliani said. Giuliani initially told ABC News he was working on the president’s defense, saying Saturday that he was prepared to argue that the president’s claims of widespread voter fraud did not constitute incitement to violence because the widely-debunked claims are true.

Prosecutors say that after Chansley climbed up to the dais where Vice President Mike Pence had been presiding moments earlier, Chansley wrote a threatening note to Pence that said: "It's only a matter of time, justice is coming."
