South Carolina officials say two such cases have been diagnosed in the state. Viruses mutate constantly, and many variants of the coronavirus are circulating around the globe, but scientists are primarily concerned with three that appear to spread more easily. The CDC says there are at least 315 cases of the British COVID variant in the US, mostly in California and Florida. Its latest forecast also predicts as many as 514,000 US deaths by February 20.
