Becoming the first crew blasted into space aboard a rocket booster and a crew capsule previously used on a spaceflight, NASA and SpaceX have successfully sent four astronauts from 3 countries into space. The same Endeavor capsule sent two astronauts to the ISS in 2020. Until they dock later this weekend at the ISS, they will have time to get some sleep and eat prepacked meals. Also notable for this mission is the fact that the pilot is married to the pilot of the previous one: Megan McArthur's husband is fellow astronaut Bob Behnken, who was part of that historic first NASA-SpaceX mission last May. In a previous interview, Behnken said this time it's "her turn to focus on getting her mission accomplished" and his turn to watch their young son. This was the third crew sent to space by SpaceX in 11 months after a 9 year break from sending humans to space from US soil. SpaceX also nailed the rocket landing back on Earth. This is all part of SpaceX’s plans for cheaper space flight by reusing many of the components.

A decades-long movement to reshape the American political map took a further step today as the House of Representatives approved a bill to make the nation’s capital the 51st state. Voting along party lines with minority Republicans in opposition, the House approved the bill 216-208. That’s likely the easy part, though. The proposal faces a far tougher fight in the Senate, where simple Democratic control of the chamber won’t be enough. So what's in the legislation? A proposal to create a 51st state with one representative and two senators, while a tiny sliver of land including the White House, the U.S. Capitol and the National Mall would remain as a federal district. Instead of the District of Columbia, the new state would be known as Washington, Douglass Commonwealth — named after famed abolitionist Frederick Douglass, who lived in Washington from 1877 until his death in 1895. An identical statehood bill passed the House in 2020, but it quickly died in the then-Republican-controlled Senate. Now, with the 2020 elections leaving Democrats in control of both chambers and the White House, Republican senators may resort to a filibuster to stymie the statehood bill. Buckle your seatbelts!

The Biden administration announced today the expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats and sanctions against dozens of people and companies as it moved to hold the Kremlin accountable for interference in last year's presidential election and the hacking of federal agencies. The sanctions also target Moscow's ability to borrow money by prohibiting U.S. financial institutions from buying Russian bonds directly from Russian institutions. The actions were not a surprise since they've been hinted at for weeks. They represent the first retaliatory measures announced against the Kremlin for the hack, familiarly known as the SolarWinds breach. In that intrusion, Russian hackers are believed to have infected widely used software with malicious code, enabling them to access the networks of at least nine agencies in what U.S. officials believe was an intelligence-gathering operation aimed at mining government secrets. Other measures are expected as well, though the administration is not likely to announce them. Officials have been advising that their response to Russia would be in ways both seen and unseen. The White House also said Biden was using diplomatic, military and intelligence channels to respond to reports that Russia encouraged the Taliban to attack U.S. and allied troops in Afghanistan based on the "best assessments" of the intelligence community

Over the past 150 years, the city grew and developed around that very spot where the first stake was drive. As we venture to and around the three historic downtown parks—Acacia, Antlers and Alamo—we’ll explore stories of celebration, innovation and determination. This tour is drawn from the Museum’s newest exhibit, COS@150, which features 150 objects, illuminating 150 stories, and commemorating 150 years.
