Joe Biden is trying to re-set his approach, acting more like a president and less like a senator. One result is a determination travel more outside of Washington and meet voters face to face -- a strategy once called 'campaigning given' by Prof. Charles Jones. He also vows to campaign heavily for Democrats this fall. In trips last week he promoted the benefits of his infrastructure bill at a collapsed bridge in Pittsburgh and strongly identified with New York mayor Eric Adams and his attempt to champion both police reform and tougher attitudes toward rising crime rates. Plenty of Democrats were happy to appear with the president but some were not, including top candidates in Pennsylvania for governor and senator. With his approval ratings stuck in the low 40s, Biden can be an asset to some Democrats but a burden to others. Steve assesses this new phase of the Biden presidency, both its successes and drawbacks.

The leader of the violent Islamic State group was killed early today, blowing himself up along with members of his family during an overnight raid carried out by U.S. special operations forces in northwestern Syria, President Joe Biden said. The raid targeted Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, who took over as head of the militant group on Oct. 31, 2019, just days after leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died during a U.S. raid in the same area. Biden said al-Qurayshi died as al-Baghdadi did, by exploding a bomb that killed himself and members of his family, including women and children, as U.S. forces approached. The operation came as ISIS has been trying for a resurgence, with a series of attacks in the region, including an assault late last month to seize a prison in northeast Syria holding at least 3,000 IS detainees, its boldest operation in years. "Thanks to the bravery of our troops this horrible terrorist leader is no more," Biden said. About 50 U.S. special operations forces landed in helicopters and attacked a house in a rebel-held corner of Syria, clashing for two hours with gunmen, witnesses said. Residents described continuous gunfire and explosions that jolted the town of Atmeh near the Turkish border, an area dotted with camps for internally displaced people from Syria's civil war. Biden said he ordered U.S. forces to "take every precaution available to minimize civilian casualties," the reason they did not conduct an airstrike on the home.

A massive winter storm is moving East from the Midwest. The impact of snow and ice caused Dallas Ft. Worth Airport, one of the busiest in the country to shut down on Thursday morning. That is leading to severe flight problems. Around 4200 flights have been cancelled as of this time and the numbers keep rising. Southwest Airlines alone has cancelled nearly a thousand flights today. Southwest and American are the most impacted since they have large operations in Texas. The storm has much of the country under winter warnings and watches. On Friday the storm is expected to be sitting over the I-95 corridor on the East Coast likely to cause more major problems.

Some positive news on the COVID-front: nationwide hospitalizations are down more than 11% from last week, with new infections dropping more than 32% over the past two weeks. But there have still been 3.8 million cases reported over the past seven days. Vaccine distribution has also stalled among eligible children over 5 with less than 40 percent fully vaccinated. Meanwhile, scientists are tracking an omicron subvariant called BA-2 – now detected in at least 29 states and accounting for less than 1% of all COVID cases in the US. British researchers have that vaccines appear to be just as effective against BA-2 as they are against the original BA-1 omicron and delta.

Steve Roberts ABC News - January 31, 2022 - KRDO’s Morning News
Monday Jan 31, 2022
Monday Jan 31, 2022
Steve says the retirement of Justice Breyer could be a political opportunity for President Biden, whose approval rating has now slumped to an average of 41%. Nominating a Black woman, as he's promised, would solidify support among the Democratic party's single most loyal voting group (Black women backed Biden 9 to 1 in 2020). It would also provide the president with the chance to change the subject away from his legislative failures and post a critical win that should unify a party that's been showing cracks lately, and he gets to crystallize the argument that elections have consequences. But there are risks: loyal Biden ally Representative James Clyburn is pushing hard for Judge Michele Childs, a fellow South Carolinian, and a failure to pick her could cause a rift. And if he does not unify Democrats and his pick is somehow defeated, Biden’s leadership credentials – already badly damaged – could suffer a fatal blow. Plus, a new ABC News/Ipsos poll finds that a plurality of Americans view the Supreme Court as motivated by partisanship, while President Joe Biden’s campaign trail vow to select a Black woman to fill a high-court vacancy without reviewing all potential candidates evokes a sharply negative reaction from voters. Just over three-quarters of Americans (76%) want Biden to consider “all possible nominees.” 23% want him to automatically follow through on his history-making commitment that the White House seems keen on seeing through. Steve breaks it all down for you.
