Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced his resignation this morning amid a mass revolt by top members of his government, marking an end to three tumultuous years in power in which he brazenly bent and sometimes broke the rules of British politics. Months of defiance ended almost with a shrug as Johnson stood outside No. 10 Downing St. and conceded that his party wanted him gone. “Them’s the breaks,” he said. But all is not quite as it seems: even though Johnson stepped down immediately as Conservative Party leader, he said he would remain as prime minister until the party chooses his successor. The timetable for that process will be announced next week, he said. But many in the party want him gone before then, and his government has been shredded by scores of resignations.

Former White House counsel pat Cipollone has reached a deal with the Jan 6 committee to testify in a transcribed interview Friday, according to sources familiar with the matter. The deal comes after the committee issued a subpoena to Cipollone last week after talks to have him testify publicly were not successful. Cipollone was one of the few aides with former President Trump the day of Jan. 6 and has significant insight into events before, leading up to and after that day. The committee has frequently referenced during public hearings as one of the advisers around Trump who was constantly telling the former president he was concerned that his actions could put him in legal jeopardy. The transcribed interview will be videotaped, sources familiar with the agreement told ABC News today. Most committee interviews have been done in this format.

An Illinois judge ordered Crimo to be held without bail. Police found the shells of 83 bullets and three ammunition magazines on the rooftop that he fired from, Lake County Assistant State's Attorney Ben Dillon said in court. No motive has been given. Brittney Griner personally reached out to President Joe Biden, urging him to help get her out of Russian custody, according to her representatives. A handwritten letter from Griner, portions of which were made public, was delivered to the White House on Monday. In it, she expressed fears she will be held in Russia "forever." But so far, no word from the White house on what the plan is to secure Griner's release. Andy will be monitoring today's White House briefing for the latest. Meanwhile, Rep. Liz Cheney said in an interview with ABC News' that he Justice Department should not avoid prosecuting Donald Trump in relation to the Jan. 6 Capitol attack if a prosecution is warranted. "Are you worried about what that means for the country, to [see] a former president prosecuted? A former president who was a likely candidate; who may in fact be running for president against Biden?" Karl asked Cheney. "I think it's a much graver constitutional threat if a president can engage in these kinds of activities, and the majority of the president's party looks away; or we as a country decide we're not actually going to take our constitutional obligations seriously," Cheney said. "I think that's a much, a much more serious threat."

As I watched the mass shooting unfold at the Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX, a panic set in. I could see that no one was going inside and that meant that there was no enforcement entry to the classroom, and that meant that with each minute, another child's life was in danger. One thing I can't tell you is why the Uvalde police Chief waited. Everyone in law enforcement is trained to go toward a shooter, not to stand around. The possibility of getting shot is part of being an oath sworn officer of the peace. I speak from experience as I have done dozens of these high-risk entries in my career. Watching the press briefing for the mass shooting at Saint Francis Hospital and the clear and concise timeline given by the Tulsa Police Chief drew such a stark comparison between the two mass shootings. Not just because in Tulsa, the response to go into the hospital and get the gunman was without hesitation, but because of the amount of information given to the public less than 24 hours after the episode. It's been 9 days since Uvalde and we still don't have all of the details. Last week, FBI director Christopher Wray, during a Congressional hearing, warned that so called "lone wolf shooters" carrying out an attack for whatever reason are perhaps the most, active imminent threat the nation faces currently. If the past 2 weeks is any indication, that warning is beyond urgent

President Biden is set to meet with Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell this afternoon to discuss rising inflation rates and the general state of the global economy. The meeting comes as Biden faces low approval ratings and sky-high inflation. The White House plans to spend June “making a concerted effort to communicate on our accomplishments to date on the economy” and how they plan to tackle inflation, according to a White House official. The first step in that strategy was an op-ed from the president himself in this morning’s Wall Street Journal, in which Biden laid much of the responsibility for the current inflation crisis at the feet of the Fed.

The number of Americans lost to COVID dwarfs the number who have died from the flu. But there are so many lives that have been impacted. As we reach this milestone we hear from those who have been most impacted.
