Club Q and Pulse nightclub shooting survivors testified before Congress on anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and violence earlier today. The hearing, according to organizers, was held to address the ways in which anti-LGBTQ legislation and rhetoric is rising -- and may be fueling a rise in violence against LGBTQ Americans. This year, Pride events, drag shows, LGBTQ-friendly medical institutions and more have all become prominent targets of violence, threats and protests. A rise in attacks, threats and protests against LGBTQ people and allies have been seen across the country amid inflammatory anti-LGBTQ rhetoric in politics. More than 300 anti-LGBTQ bills were introduced at the state level in the last year, according to the Human Rights Campaign. Survivors called out the bill critics dub the Don’t say Gay bill that bans instruction on gender identity and sexual orientation in kindergarten through third grade.

New mask policies are back in parts of the country as the so-called “tripledemic” of COVID-19, RSV, and the flu spikes nationwide. In New York City, and in several other prominent locations in California and in Arizona officials aren’t instituting mask mandates— but highly recommending them. Concerns are especially growing around the elderly – the most at-risk demographic. According to the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, about half of nursing home recipients are up-to-date on their COVID vaccines.

Many parents of young children know this has been a rough few weeks. Hit hard by colds, flu, RSV, and positive COVID cases, classrooms have had many kids out sick. That has made finding cold medications difficult in many areas of the country. Shelves are bare. Some pharmacies say they are calling to suppliers trying to find stashes of cold meds. And it could be a month before they can get restocked with Tamiflu and some antibiotics. Pharmacists say talk to them about tricks like taking smaller adult doses for a child – which is not always okay but can be sometimes. And it comes as Los Angeles County – the nation’s most populated is on the verge of possibly reimplementing mandatory mask orders in public places.

Another example of the communication issues coming out of the investigation into the four murdered college students in Idaho. This week the prosecutor insinuated maybe the home was targeted rather than the victims. Now police have issued a statement saying detectives do not currently know if the residence or any of the occupants were specifically targeted but continue to investigate. Yet police have repeatedly said it was a targeted crime. In a one-on-one interview yesterday with ABC News the police chief said they do believe it to have been targeted. Although he would not define what targeted means to him or his detectives. Still there is no suspect, no motive, and no murder weapon. Last night families gathered and spoke at a vigil on campus.

The prosecutor in Moscow, Idaho is now saying maybe the victims weren’t targeted in the murders of the 4 college students. Maybe the house was targeted. That is contrary to what police have said from the beginning. They have insisted it was likely a targeted killing but the prosecutor says they don’t have evidence actually showing that to the be the case. And we expect new information today from the police chief. Tonight a large vigil is planned on campus that was delayed before Thanksgiving.

The Federal Reserve is set to raise interest rates again today by an estimated three-quarters of a percentage point. The goal is to curb high prices. Outstanding credit card balances will be affected, and the move also comes as mortgage payments are at highs not seen in decades. Mounting evidence suggests that previous rate hikes have slowed key areas of the economy but inflation remains highly elevated. The move would mark the latest in a string of borrowing cost increases imposed by the Fed in recent months as it tries to slash price increases by cooling the economy and choking off demand. But the approach risks tipping the U.S. into a recession and putting millions out of work.
