President Biden this morning told Americans the nation's financial systems are safe, seeking to project calm following the swift and stunning collapse of two banks that prompted fears of a broader upheaval.
"Your deposits will be there when you need them," he said. The president, speaking from the White House shortly before a trip to the West Coast, said he'd seek to hold those responsible accountable, and pressed for better oversight and regulation of larger banks. And he promised no losses would be borne by taxpayers. Biden also said management of the banks should be fired. "If the bank is taken over by the FDIC, the people running the bank should not work there anymore," he said, referring to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp., the agency responsible for ensuring the stability of the banking system.

Brad Garrett - ABC News - March 2, 2023 - KRDO’s Afternoon News
Thursday Mar 02, 2023
Thursday Mar 02, 2023
For three years we have anguished over how COVID 19 became a worldwide pandemic, killing over seven million people, dramatically changing each and every one of our way of life -- without knowing definitively how it all started. The U.S. Department of Energy, who have many renowned scientists, recently stated that it is more likely the virus was released because of a lab accident at the Wuhan lab -- and which the FBI has been saying since April 2020. But the story is still somewhat of a mystery, much like the cases Brad spent years investigating, where investigators have their own theories. Was this intentional by the Chinese (less likely); a lab accident (more reasonable); or did it start with contaminated animals who passed it to humans at a Wuhan market as originally hypothesized? The Wuhan lab has deep expertise researching coronavirus, but it is cloudy as to why. Possibilities run the gamut from a potential biological threat (which it sadly became) or as a defense if China came under biological attack itself. Now here at home, the FBI looks to their own scientists (it has many), and others to pinpoint the origin. Proving one of these scenarios will have to come from human sources (those that worked in the lab or for the Chinese government), phone intercepts, recorded conversations and many other investigative techniques (i.e. spy work). Working investigations in foreign locations where we are not welcome creates many obstacles -- but it’s not impossible. The bottom line is it is absolutely essential to get to the bottom of the origin of the origin of the coronavirus that spawned COVID because it is frankly scary that a possible, simple accident in Wuhan, China could set off a devastating pandemic that circled the globe. Think of it this way: imagine what a terrorist could do, procuring something far more deadly than COVID 19. Brad will discuss what the FBI may be doing to support their belief this was a lab accident.

The White House is responding to Marjorie Taylor Greene, Paul Gosar, Lauren Boebert and Scott Perry all earning spots on the House Oversight committee in a new statement from White House Spokesperson, Ian Sams. In the statement, Sams slams Republicans for "handing the keys of oversight to the most extreme MAGA members of the Republican caucus who promote violent rhetoric and dangerous conspiracy theories." While the four members are not explicitly named in the statement, the White House specifically notes new members of the committee include individuals who "suggested violence against political opponents, with one drawing a bipartisan censure from the House. They have defended and downplayed a violent insurrection against our democracy, and one defied a subpoena in an investigation of his own involvement in January 6." This highlights just how combative the next two years could be with the oversight committee, which has already launched an investigation into Biden's handling of classified documents, and among other topics related to the Biden administration.

President Biden visited the U.S.- Mexico border on Sunday, his first trip since taking office, with a stop in El Paso, Texas. According to a White House official, Biden wanted to highlight El Paso as a model for what can be done with the immense task of migration management in the face of intense challenges the city has faced. In the past month, El Paso has become an epicenter for the ongoing surge of people arriving to the U.S. in the south. And today, Biden, along with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and Mexican President Andres Manuel López Obrador, are gathering in Mexico City the North American leaders' summit. López Obrador said earlier today that he would consider accepting more migrants than previously announced under President Biden’s plan to turn away people from four nations who cross illegally into the United States. “this is part of what we are going to talk about at the summit,” López Obrador said. “We support this type of measures, to give people options, alternatives,” he said, adding that “the numbers may be increased.” Jake Sullivan, Biden’s national security adviser, cautioned nothing was decided yet.

California, especially the northern part of the state, has been dealing with weeks of nearly non-stop rain. The ground is super-saturated and can't hold additional water so now rivers are rising to flood stage. Today rain is falling statewide but the focus is on Northern California where evacuations and rescues are underway. In Santa Cruz County water has reached stop sign height in at least one area. Other areas like along Sonoma County's Russian River residents are on standby to be ready to go. It will be a full week of rain.
