The leader of the violent Islamic State group was killed early today, blowing himself up along with members of his family during an overnight raid carried out by U.S. special operations forces in northwestern Syria, President Joe Biden said. The raid targeted Abu Ibrahim al-Hashimi al-Qurayshi, who took over as head of the militant group on Oct. 31, 2019, just days after leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi died during a U.S. raid in the same area. Biden said al-Qurayshi died as al-Baghdadi did, by exploding a bomb that killed himself and members of his family, including women and children, as U.S. forces approached. The operation came as ISIS has been trying for a resurgence, with a series of attacks in the region, including an assault late last month to seize a prison in northeast Syria holding at least 3,000 IS detainees, its boldest operation in years. "Thanks to the bravery of our troops this horrible terrorist leader is no more," Biden said. About 50 U.S. special operations forces landed in helicopters and attacked a house in a rebel-held corner of Syria, clashing for two hours with gunmen, witnesses said. Residents described continuous gunfire and explosions that jolted the town of Atmeh near the Turkish border, an area dotted with camps for internally displaced people from Syria's civil war. Biden said he ordered U.S. forces to "take every precaution available to minimize civilian casualties," the reason they did not conduct an airstrike on the home.

A massive winter storm is moving East from the Midwest. The impact of snow and ice caused Dallas Ft. Worth Airport, one of the busiest in the country to shut down on Thursday morning. That is leading to severe flight problems. Around 4200 flights have been cancelled as of this time and the numbers keep rising. Southwest Airlines alone has cancelled nearly a thousand flights today. Southwest and American are the most impacted since they have large operations in Texas. The storm has much of the country under winter warnings and watches. On Friday the storm is expected to be sitting over the I-95 corridor on the East Coast likely to cause more major problems.

The airlines just can’t catch a break. As they try to catch up from the weather and COVID sick calls since Christmas Eve snow falling at two major hub airports in Nashville and Denver is causing a load of new flight cancellations. Southwest has, as of this writing, cancelled nearly 600 flights again today followed by United, Southwest, and Alaska. Close to 1600 flights and growing have been cancelled in the US. Airports in Nashville, Denver, Chicago, and Newark are dealing with the most cancelled flights. While weather is playing a role today, over a thousand flights have been cancelled every day since Christmas Eve because the airlines say so many workers are calling out sick due to COVID cases or exposures.

In an effort to be better prepared for scenarios in which future protests might grow violent, officials in the Biden Administration have conducted simulations and tabletop exercises, similar to war games, to analyze information sharing and law enforcement capabilities. One exercise was conducted in May out of Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall in Virginia. In that simulation, a protest on the National Mall grew violent, and social media posts drew more people to join the conflict. The exercise featured reports of a pipe bomb, similar to the one found outside of DNC Headquarters on January 6th. In September, a weeklong virtual exercise run in McLean, Va., simulated a violent protest on the steps of the Supreme Court, and tested the ability of various federal, state and local law enforcement jurisdictions to work together in response. In addition to those larger tests, the National Security Council has been holding weekly meetings in partnership with federal law enforcement agencies to discuss planned protests and other events. Officials in the meetings analyze threat reports and travel reservations to gauge crowd sizes.

CES (formerly called the Consumer Electronics Show – but organizers say now it’s just called CES) kicks off today in Las Vegas after a COVID hiatus last year. Organizers are determined to make this year’s show happen despite the extreme transmissibility of Omicron in large crowds, many major companies pulling out, keynote speeches going virtual, and tech reporters deciding to cover the show virtually. The show’s final day has been cut. Many big tech publications have opted not to cover it in person fear of putting their staff at risk. In fact, ABC’s Alex Stone was supposed to be there but because of COVID protocols he will be covering it remotely. In 2019 170,000 people attended CES. This year attendance is totally unknown. Las Vegas relies on CES as its biggest trade show and as it tries to bring back convention business. And of course, as with all CES shows, there are bigger, clearer TV’s being unveiled and gadgets like a $310,000 robot that gives human like massages, beds that wake you up in the morning, and smart toothbrushes. If there was a theme this year it would be companies responding to many people working and staying at home and looking for pandemic comforts and convenience. Alex can give you the skinny on what the first ever CES during a pandemic (and a current spike in cases and people told to stay away from massive crowds) is turning into and how organizers are trying to move forward at this odd time.
