Lawmakers have announced that after months of stalled negotiations they have reached an agreement on a 9/11-style commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol.  A vote on the commission bill is expected on the House floor next week, but the timing for a vote in the Senate is still unclear.  The announcement of an agreement comes after months of intense negotiations between Republicans and Democrats on the size and scope of the commission -- and after a week of a number of Republican lawmakers casting doubt on what they themselves witnessed at the Capitol just four months ago.  The agreed-upon commission would include 10 members with significant expertise in the areas of law enforcement, civil rights, civil liberties, privacy, intelligence and cybersecurity. Current government officers or employees would be prohibited from appointment, according to the bipartisan duo, and each party would select five members to be on the commission.

Another busy weekend for streaming and new movies! Angelina Jolie returns to the big screen in the survival thriller “Those Who Wish Me Dead,” in theaters and on HBO Max. Ewan McGregor stars in “Halston,” a Netflix mini-series about the famed fashion designer. “Hacks” on HBO Max stars Jean Smart as a super successful stand-up comic in need of a fresh way of looking at things. “Moonlight’s” Barry Jenkins adapts the Pulitzer Prize winning novel “Underground Railroad” into a limited series for Amazon Prime Video. And in a rare move for Netflix, Zack Snyder’s “Army of the Dead” hits theaters a week ahead of its streaming debut. That covers what Jason has seen and can review. In addition, he can talk about “Spiral,” starring Chris Rock, which is the latest entry in the “Saw” franchise.

60 days after President Biden signed the American Rescue Plan, his $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief package, into law, his administration is rolling out $350 billion in funding to state, local, and tribal governments.  The president is expected to go into details this afternoon, touting the help it will provide to workers and the economy, and announcing recipients will have plenty of authority to determine how to use their funding. This funding was one of the major sticking points for Republicans on Capitol Hill, who argued that many states didn't face revenue losses as steep as once feared, and that the federal government shouldn't bail out state and local governments that are in debt from previous decisions.  Biden is holding  steady with approval of a majority of Americans, according to a new poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. The survey shows Biden is buoyed in particular by the public's broad backing for his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.  Biden's overall approval rating sits at 63%. When it comes to the new Democratic president's handling of the pandemic, 71% of Americans approve, including 47% of Republicans.
