When was the last time you wanted a shake with your fires -- or a McFlurry for dessert at McDonald's?  And were you actually able to get it?   The conspiracy theories are mounting and now the feds have had it with McDonald’s broken McFlurry machines. The Federal Trade Commission is reportedly investigating why the burger chain’s ice cream machines break down so often, a matter that’s become the butt of late-night TV jokes and viral social media posts.  The FTC contacted McDonald’s franchise owners this summer seeking information on what the problem is with the chain’s ice cream machines.  The franchisees have had it too.  “We are tired of being the butt of late night jokes. So are our customers and crews,” The National Owners Association, a group of franchisees, said in a May message to owners.  And lest you think this is a frivolous matter keep this in mind: those ice cream machines (when they're actually working) account for a whopping 60% of the chain’s dessert sales in the U.S.  As one woman said "“I’m beginning to wonder if this McDonald’s even has an ice cream machine,” an Atlanta customer tweeted about her local outlet. “It’s been ‘broken’ so long that I’m coming up with conspiracy theories.”  Wondering about your local Mikki D's? There's an online tracker called ‘McBroken’ that monitors the outages across cities so you can check the status saving yourself the devastating disappointment of pulling up and being denied. 

 

The House Armed Services Committee is passing an amendment keeping Space Command in Colorado Springs a bit longer. 

Not a great sign for the box office – we won’t see the sequel “Top Gun: Maverick” this year. Paramount is moving the Tom Cruise film to next year, as concern continues about the ability to open a blockbuster right now, thanks to the pandemic and the Delta variant. And several other movies are playing musical chairs as well, including Cruise’s “Mission Impossible 7.” On the flip side, the first Marvel movie to open ONLY in theaters since the start of the pandemic hits multiplexes tonight. Early industry forecasts say “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” could open to $50-$70 million this holiday weekend. If that holds it would be a Labor Day weekend record, but also the lowest debut for a Marvel film.

The most restrictive abortion law in the nation took effect in Texas early today, effectively barring the procedure across the state, as the U.S. Supreme Court remained silent on an emergency request from women’s health groups to block the measure while legal challenges continue. Texas becomes the first and only state in the country to outlaw abortions after about six weeks of pregnancy. And in an unusual twist, the law expressly prohibits the state from enforcing the ban, instead authorizing private citizens to bring civil suits against anyone who "aids or abets" an abortion -- but not the patient herself. Twelve other states have passed similar laws that have not yet taken effect due to legal challenges.

The Department of Education has launched civil rights investigations into five states that have laws banning mask mandates. The states are Iowa, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Utah.  In Florida, which is not on the list, the education commissioner has announced the state will withhold funding from Broward County and Alachua County Public Schools because their school mask mandates do not have a non-medical opt-out. At a school board meeting in Lee County on masks last night, some in the crowd accused the school board of being “Marxist communist tyrants” who “support child sex trafficking.”

With President Biden’s Tuesday deadline to withdraw from Afghanistan looming, new polling from ABC News and Ipsos there is overwhelming bipartisan support for keeping U.S. troops in the country until all Americans and Afghans who aided the United States during the 20-year war have been evacuated. More than 8 in 10 (84%) Americans think U.S. troops should remain in the country until all Americans are evacuated, and just over 7 in 10 (71%) think they should stay until all Afghans who helped the United States are evacuated as well. The attitude cuts across party lines – a rarity in today’s political landscape – with overwhelming majorities of Republicans, Democrats and independents supporting a deadline extension. Fewer than 4 in 10 Americans approving of the president’s handling of Afghanistan. How can the Biden administration evacuate all US citizens while also sticking to that August 31^st deadline? Steve brings you his analysis.

The U.S. military reported its biggest day of evacuation flights out of Afghanistan today, but deadly violence that has blocked many desperate evacuees from entering Kabul's airport persisted, and the Taliban signaled they might soon seek to shut down the evacuation.

In remarks over the weekend, President Biden seemed open to extending the Aug. 31 deadline on American troop withdrawal - something that the Taliban is now warning against. State Department officials remained coy on the deadline today, adding that it doesn't affect efforts to evacuate those who want to leave Afghanistan. It comes as roughly 16,000 people have been evacuated out of Kabul in the last 24 hours, bringing that total to nearly 37,000. In that same timeframe, some 1,300 evacuees arrived at Dulles International Airport on five flights while 1,200 Afghans have been distributed between four US bases: Fort Lee, Fort McCoy, Fort Bliss, and Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst.

Anxiety in the United States over COVID-19 is at its highest level since last winter, a new poll shows, as the delta variant rages, more states and school districts adopt mask and vaccination requirements and the nation’s hospitals once again fill to capacity.  The poll from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research also finds that majorities of American adults want vaccination mandates for those attending movies, sports, concerts and other crowded events; those traveling by airplane; and workers in hospitals, restaurants, stores and government offices.  The poll shows that 41% are “extremely” or “very” worried about themselves or their family becoming infected with the virus. That is up from 21% in June, and about the same as in January, during the country's last major surge, when 43% were extremely or very worried.
