After weeks of brinkmanship, Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer on Thursday announced Democrats and Republicans have reached a deal to avert the U.S. defaulting on its debt for the first time through a temporary increase in the debt ceiling through early December. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell followed Schumer and confirmed a deal is close to a vote -- with the GOP leader claiming credit for saving the American people from default and the Democrats from themselves.  "The Senate is moving toward the plan I laid out last night to spare the American people a manufactured crisis," he said.

A lot of people not laughing at Dave Chappelle’s new comedy special on Netflix. In “The Closer,” he once again makes the LGBTQIA+ community the target of much of his material. GLAAD is among those not happy, accusing the comedian of ridiculing marginalized communities. Some are calling for Netflix to remove the special. Others, including Chance the Rapper, are standing by Chappelle. Also, the new James Bond movie “No Time to Die” hits theaters in just a few hours for Thursday night sneak previews – some think it has a shot at being the first pandemic-era film to hit $100 million at the box office in its opening weekend in North America. Jason says that’s a very strong possibility, but offers one reason why it may not.

Election ballots are set to be mailed out to El Paso County voters on October 8th.  All ballots are due into the Election Office no later than 7:00 PM MST November 2nd.  On Thursday's "The Extra", El Paso County Clerk and Recorder Chuck Broerman joined host Shannon Brinias.

Colorado Springs rates as some of the worst air quality in the state over the course of 2020.

The leading theory is that the large Southern California oil spill is the result of a large cargo ship’s anchor hooking the pipeline underwater and dragging it.  Divers have found a 4000 foot section of the pipeline was moved 150 feet and dragged along the bottom with a 13 inch gash where oil leaked out.  The CEO of Amplify Energy won’t talk publicly about how his employees responded to what unfolded or how alarms work to alert workers to a problem.  In a letter to the company officially ordering the pipeline shutdown, federal regulators say alarms sounded at 2:30am on Saturday indicating pressure loss in the pipeline which is a sign of a leak.  But the document says Amplify didn’t shutdown the pipeline until 6am, 3.5 hours later.  And that Amplify did not notify authorities for 3 more hours, 6 hours after the initial alarms.  It is all part of the investigation.

Pikes Peak Habitat for Humanity (PPHFH) recently opened a second ReStore in northeast Colorado Springs (6250 Tutt Blvd near Dublin Blvd). The first ReStore (411 S. Wahsatch Ave) opened in 2004. The Habitat ReStore is a home improvement store and resale center that sells donated furniture, home accessories, building materials and appliances to the public at a fraction of the retail price. Habitat for Humanity uses funds raised by its ReStores to help more families build, rehabilitate, and repair their homes. The Colorado Springs Police Department issued a shelter-in-place near Cottonwood Creek Park.

Two weeks before the "calamity" Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen predicts could strike by Oct. 18, President Joe Biden today blasted Republicans for "playing Russian roulette with the U.S. economy" in refusing to join Democrats to raise the debt ceiling so the U.S. does not default on its debt for the first time ever. During an exchange with a reporter this morning, President Biden said he could not guarantee the U.S. wouldn’t reach the debt ceiling  “Can you guarantee that the U.S. will not reach the debt ceiling, that that will not happen?” a reporter asked.  "No I can't,” Biden replied. “That's up to Mitch McConnell."  He added, before walking away: "I can't believe that that will be the end result, because the consequence is so dire. I don't believe that. But can I guarantee it? If I could, I would. But I can't."

A new pill treatment for COVID-19 may keep patients diagnosed with COVID out of the hospital, according to the drug manufacturer. Taking a course of a particular antiviral pill over five days, shortly after COVID-19 diagnosis, may slash the risk of being hospitalized or dying of the virus by 50%, according to preliminary results announced by pharmaceutical companies Merck and Ridgeback. If this pill – called molnupiravir – is ultimately authorized by the Food and Drug Administration, it would be the first antiviral pill people can take at home to reduce their risk of winding up in the hospital from the coronavirus. Dollar Tree embedded in its very name what it stands for: Behind these doors, everything can be had for just $1.  But thanks to rising costs, that mantra is only mostly true.   The cost of clothes, cars, food and just about everything else has soared this year as the global economy emerges from a pandemic uppercut and Dollar Tree has not been untouched.  Last month the retail chain said that rising shipping costs would take a bite of $1.50 to $1.60 out of its per-share profits this year. That’s a huge hit for any business, perhaps more so for one founded decades ago steadfastly calling itself “Only $1.00 Inc.”  Raising some prices will certainly give the national chain some flexibility and likely more variety on its shelves. But then again a dollar this year will not buy you what it did in 2020. 

 

Pueblo Police are looking into a shooting that was reported near Wyoming Ave. It happened this afternoon, and prompted a nearby school to go into lockdown.

Vaccine mandates are now playing out at the nation’s biggest airlines.  United Airlines is firing 593 employees who the airline says refused to get vaccinated and did not have exemptions. The airline is also being sued by at least 7 employees for planning to put workers with religious exemptions on unpaid leave indefinitely saying they are being discriminated against.  United made the rule to essentially weed out those using religious exemptions as an excuse to see who is willing to go on unpaid leave for, maybe, months because of their unwillingness to the vaccine.  Southwest and American pilots are asking the White House to exempt them from vaccine mandates claiming, without evidence, that the vaccine could have career ending side effects for them.  They also say they are held to such a high physical standard that the vaccine should not be mandated for them.  4200 American Airlines pilots are still unvaccinated.  They threaten that holiday travel could be disrupted if they are forced to get vaccinated.

The Americans with Disabilities Act turned 31 years old in 2021. It is the civil rights law that protects the rights of people with disabilities, the nation’s largest minority group.  On the Extra Wednesday, the Rocky Mountain ADA Center is  of 10 federally funded centers  that provides free technical assistance, training and other services to COS and CO on the ADA – and it just received a new 5 year grant to continue operating in COS!

Over 3 million infant loungers made by Boppy, the popular maker of baby products, are being recalled after reports of eight infant deaths between 2015 and 2020, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) announced today, urging people to "immediately stop" using the loungers.   The recalled products were sold at retailers including Pottery Barn, Target, and Walmart and Amazon.com from January 2004 through today, according to the CPSC. The loungers retailed for between $30 and $44 and were "sold in a variety of colors and fashions."  Boppy also distributed about 35,000 of the recalled loungers in Canada, according to the CPSC.  The news of the recall follows a report from Consumer Reports earlier this month that found seven recent infant deaths were tied to nursing pillows and infant loungers made by Boppy.  It also comes one year after the CPSC issued a warning for caregivers about the risks of using pillow-like products for sleeping infants.
