Inflation surged in June at its fastest pace in nearly 13 years amid a burst in used vehicle costs and price increases in food and energy. The consumer price index increased 5.4% from a year earlier, the largest jump since August 2008, just before the worst of the financial crisis. While the jump in prices was not unexpected, the goods that have seen the sharpest increases are the ones that hit consumers' wallets the hardest. Investopedia's editor in chief, Caleb Silver breaks down where prices are rising, and what impact it could have on consumer spending at this stage of the recovery, and how long it might last. Plus, the weekly jobless claims are out at 8:30AM ET, and will shine a light on whether Americans are getting back to work as the labor shortage hampers the recovery.

At the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia on Tuesday, President Biden decried Republican efforts to limit ballot access across the country as a "21st century Jim Crow assault," while warning Americans that the GOP push to restrict voting and a "selfish" challenge of the 2020 election results were "the most significant test of our democracy since the Civil War."  Biden also hinted at future administration action on voting rights, saying that he and Vice President Kamala Harris "will be making it clear that there is real peril in making raw power, rather than the idea of liberty, the centerpiece of the common life."  But while he was encouraging more Americans to participate in the political process, Biden stopped short of endorsing changes to the Senate filibuster rule that would allow Democrats to pass voting rights measures with a simple majority vote, something advocates -- as well as many Democrats -- have begged him to support.  That did not go unnoticed by voting advocacy group, Black Voters Matter.  In a statement released after the president's speech, the group criticized the Biden administration as “acting as if its hands are tied" when, it said,  that isn't strictly the case. "In fact, the President didn’t mention the filibuster once in his twenty-minute remarks, despite the massive threat it poses to voting rights and other key legislation."

Civil rights leaders called on President Biden to use his voice, influence and power to ensure access to the ballot box for all Americans.  While Biden isn’t staying silent, it’s unclear if his current efforts will create any significant change.  Biden is slated to give remarks on voting rights in Philadelphia today.  Reminder that the City of Brotherly Love is just one of the areas targeted by Former President Trump with false claims about voter fraud. Trump narrowly lost Pennsylvania to Biden in the 2020 election.  Public pressure alone hasn’t been successful in beating back the onslaught of GOP-sponsored restrictive voting legislation.  Without all Democrats on the same page on filibuster reform, federal voting reform will likely remain in limbo while states like Texas move toward passing restrictive voting legislation.
