The Biden administration announced today the expulsion of 10 Russian diplomats and sanctions against dozens of people and companies as it moved to hold the Kremlin accountable for interference in last year's presidential election and the hacking of federal agencies. The sanctions also target Moscow's ability to borrow money by prohibiting U.S. financial institutions from buying Russian bonds directly from Russian institutions. The actions were not a surprise since they've been hinted at for weeks. They represent the first retaliatory measures announced against the Kremlin for the hack, familiarly known as the SolarWinds breach. In that intrusion, Russian hackers are believed to have infected widely used software with malicious code, enabling them to access the networks of at least nine agencies in what U.S. officials believe was an intelligence-gathering operation aimed at mining government secrets. Other measures are expected as well, though the administration is not likely to announce them. Officials have been advising that their response to Russia would be in ways both seen and unseen. The White House also said Biden was using diplomatic, military and intelligence channels to respond to reports that Russia encouraged the Taliban to attack U.S. and allied troops in Afghanistan based on the "best assessments" of the intelligence community

July 31, 1871, the story of the City of Colorado Springs began. A small group of people gathered near what is today the southeast corner of Cascade and Pikes Peak Avenue for a founding ceremony. Over the past 150 years, the city grew and developed around that very spot where the first stake was drive. As we venture to and around the three historic downtown parks—Acacia, Antlers and Alamo—we’ll explore stories of celebration, innovation and determination. This tour is drawn from the Museum’s newest exhibit, COS@150, which features 150 objects, illuminating 150 stories, and commemorating 150 years.

The White House announced today that President Biden will create a commission to study possible changes to the Supreme Court. The commission comes as President Biden has been under pressure to add seats to the bench to compensate for a right-ward political shift after Trump appointed 3 nominees, one of whom was an Obama-era vacancy held up in the Senate. The establishment of a commission to study the issue was a campaign promise from Biden. Biden also released a $1.5 trillion wish list for the federal budget this morning, asking for an 8.4% increase in agency operating budgets with substantial gains for Democratic priorities like education, health care, housing and environmental protection. The request by the White House budget office spells out Biden's top priorities as Congress weighs its spending plans for next year. It's the first financial outline of Democrats' broader ambitions since the expiration of a 2011 law that capped congressional spending.

President Biden, in his first gun control measures since taking office, announced a half-dozen executive actions today aimed at addressing a proliferation of gun violence across the nation that he called an “epidemic and an international embarrassment.” But today's announcement actually underscores the limitations of Biden’s executive power to act on guns. They include moves to tighten regulations on homemade guns and provide more resources for gun-violence prevention, but fall far short of the sweeping gun-control agenda he laid out on the campaign trail.

As travel begins booming amid increased vaccinations, Florida has announced it is suing the federal government and CDC over the cruise no sail order. Governor Ron DeSantis says he wants cruise ships to be allowed to sail immediately. He also says you should be allowed to do so without being forced to show that you’ve been vaccinated. Also today - This doesn’t happen very often, especially during a pandemic: A new mainline airline launches in the US today. Avelo Airlines is taking a page out of Southwest’s playbook and trying to be a low cost airline flying all Boeing 737’s with few fees. Based out of Burbank, California the plan is to fly to mainly underserved, small, outdoor recreation destinations like Grand Junction, Colorado and Eugene, Oregon. While the airlines have been struggling, Avelo's founders -- who have worked at Allegiant and United -- say this is the perfect time to launch a new airline as domestic travel is coming back strong. Tickets went on sale today for $19. The airline begins flying it's 737’s at the end of the month.

According to federal officials, the US is vaccinating an average of 3.1 million people a day, with nearly 1 in 4 adults fully vaccinated. It comes after a high of 4 million people received shots in one day over the weekend. Despite the positive numbers, officials warned that we could see a spring surge. "You might remember a year ago, or a little bit more than a year ago when we were looking for the summer to rescue us from surges, it was in fact the opposite," Dr. Anthony Fauci said. "We saw some substantial surges in the summer, I don't think we should even think about relying on the weather to bail us out of anything we're in right now." Dr. Rochelle Walensky also warned that young people could be at risk, saying that young adults were predominantly affected by the uptick in cases and variants.

Between lower COVID numbers and more vaccine flowing that Americans are feeling increasingly comfortable taking to the skies. The fast uptick in travel caused Delta, over the weekend, to run out of pilots leading to cancelled flights and the airline temporarily filling middle seats. United Airlines is facing a similar problem, saying it needs to hire pilots again. The TSA reported today over 6 million people went through airport checkpoints. It comes as doctors keep warning that Americans can't let their guards down yet and that all of this sudden travel without enough people vaccinated could mean a big increase in cases looming

Investigators are still trying to put together the story that led to the violence on Capitol Hill on Friday, which left two people dead including a US Capitol Police officer. One of two injured Capitol Police officers died after being hit by a suspect who then rammed their car into the north barricade of the Capitol complex Friday afternoon before exiting the vehicle with a knife. The suspect who was killed by Capitol Police has been identified as Noah Green, law enforcement sources told ABC News. Authorities are taking a close look at social media postings believed to be associated with Green. No clear motive has been established, sources said. “This attack, combined with the violent events of the January 6th insurrection, have left our officers reeling,” Union Chairman Gus Papathanasiou Officer said.
