An American journalist and her mother were murdered in Turkey, but a quick investigation and prosecution led to a conclusion of domestic violence that some have questioned.  Moreover, questions have been raised as to why the U.S. didn't investigate the case?  The slayings of Halla Barakat, 24, and her mother Orouba, 62, an activist fierce critical of Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, held similarities to the murder of journalist Jamal Khashoggi.  Recently, a United Nations official tasked with investigating extrajudicial killings expressed interest in further investigating the Barakat murders.  The murders have been the subject of a  new co-investigation by ABC News and  Reveal from the Center for Investigative reporting.  Extra host Shannon Brinias discussed the case with lead reporter Fariba Nawa from her base in Istanbul.  "Justice for Halla" aired on ABC' Nightline and is reported in podcast form.  To listen to the podcast of the ABC/Reveal report, click here for Reveal link.  For further information on the investigation on the ABC News website, click here

Oct. 17,  The Home Front exhibit opens
WWII was fought both at home and overseas, but in different ways.

Public opening Saturday, Oct. 17
Time: 10 a.m.

“The story of WWII aviation must include the Home Front; the social change and disruption, the building of a large military, the training of airmen, the building of aircraft, the innovation, in short the marshalling of America, were critical to success in the war,” said Gene Pfeffer, historian at the National Museum of World War II Aviation. “WWII was fought both at home and overseas, but in different ways.”

When America went to war in 1941, the entire nation went to war. The compelling story of the Home Front during WWII is a key focus of the museum. Volunteers have worked for several months to complete the planning and installation of the exhibit area that will tell the story of how America became the “Arsenal of Democracy,” providing war equipment, aircraft, weapons, materials, and expertise to defeat the fascist regimes of Germany and Japan.

The Home Front exhibit will consist of four display areas: The War at Home, Mobilizing America, Building American Air Power, and Women Who Served.

Standard admission prices are in effect. Masks and social distancing required.

The purchase of advance on-line tickets is encouraged. Advance ticket prices are:
Adult                            $13
Child (4-12)                 $ 9
Senior & Military         $11

During this global health crisis, humor can be a way of boosting immunity by elevating your mood, a topic explored on Tuesday's "The Extra".  Humor has been found to have short-term and long-term health benefits, such as: stimulation of organs via enhanced intake of oxygen during laughter; increased release of endorphins; lowered heart rate and blood pressure; release of stress-fighting neuropeptides; and easing of depression symptoms.  Host Shannon Brinias and her guest Bill Stainton discussed strategies for utilizing humor as a coping mechanism, as well as the need for people to apply innovative thinking to their everyday lives.  Stainton is a Certified Professional Speaker inducted into the speakers' association Hall of Fame, as well as a 29-time Emmy Award winner for "Almost Live", a weekly comedy show.  Stainton writes a frequent blog discussing these topics.  More information can be found at BillStainton.com.
